This shrine was built to worship the spirit of Prince Morinaga, the son of Emperor Godaigo.
Prince Morinaga served Emperor Godaigo by doing such things as fighting to overthrow the forces of the Kamakura Shogunate.
After the fall of the Shoganate, the Emperor restored direct Imperial rule (the Kemmu Restoration), and Prince Morinaga was appointed commander-in-chief "Sei Taisyogun". He was later captured by Ashikaga Takauji during a confrontation, and killed at the young age of 28. The cave cell where the Prince is said to have died still remains at the rear of the shrine.
In October each year, "Takigi Noh"(Not plays performed by the light of burning firewood) are performed in the Shrine grounds.
