Aburatsubo
Aburatsubo shintotororitoshite fukashi
Shintotorori soko kara hikari
Aburatsubo deathly quiet, thick, deep
Deathly quiet, thick
Light shines from the bottom
This poem tells the story of 500 years of the obscure,
sad history of the entire Miura clan of their time at
Aburatsubo. The poem was written by the poet, Kitahara
Hakushu.
At the beginning of the Taisho Period, near where the
University of Tokyo Misaki Marine Biological Station
is currently located, there was a large windmill used
to pump seawater.
Yuuyake koyake daifuusha no uhe wo yuku
Gan go ichiretsu karasu ga samba
Red sunset, the large windmill is turning
A row of wild geese, three crows
Aburatsubo kara Moroiso mire ha manmarona
Akai yuuhi ga ima oturu toko
From Aburatsubo one can see the red setting sun at
Moroiso
In the way, one can understand the deep relationship
between history and nature in Aburatsubo.
Freestyle haiku poet, hagiwara Seisensui, the author
of Tabi no Inshyou, wrote that this time in Aburatsubo
had a special feeling in the air to create poetry.
Seisensui's style of poetry was largely influenced
by the writings of Hakushu. Both of them had a great
love for the color of the waters at Aburatsubo, thun
their poems were born.
